Gaurikund, at about 1,982 m, is where the road ends and the sacred walk begins. Tradition says Goddess Parvati performed penance here to win Shiva. The town has a small Gauri temple, hot water springs, GMVN and budget accommodation, food stalls, and the pony/palki booking counters for the trek.
Most pilgrims sleep here before an early-morning start, or arrive from Kedarnath in the evening for the shuttle back to Sonprayag.
