The main rituals
- Mahabhishek: The pre-dawn grand abhishek of the Jyotirlinga with water, milk, curd, honey, ghee and bel patra, accompanied by Vedic chanting. Witnessing it is considered especially blessed.
- Abhishek / Rudrabhishek: Ritual bathing of the lingam with the chanting of the Rudram — the classic Shiva offering.
- Daily pujas and bhog: The deity’s daily worship cycle of bathing, dressing, offering and aarti.
- Special occasion pujas: On festivals and auspicious dates, additional rituals are performed per the temple calendar.
Spiritual significance
Abhishek symbolises the offering of the elements and the devotee’s own ego at Shiva’s feet. The substances each carry meaning — water for purity, milk for nourishment, honey for sweetness of speech, bel patra as Shiva’s beloved leaf. Whatever the form, the essence is surrender: Om Namah Shivaya.
